Garden City and Scott City 1st and 2nd Respectfully

Riding the momentum of a good weekend in Pratt, the Ulysses Wrestlers were eager to put on a good show in front of the home crowd at the 52nd Annual Ron Smith Invitational at Ulysses High School.  They didn’t disappoint, placing 9 of 12 varsity wrestlers and one JV wrestler.  The Tigers placed third in team points for the second weekend in a row.

“Overall, we wrestled well this weekend” said Zach Pixler, first year head coach. “We still have some improvement to do, but we are on the right track.  We just need to keep pushing each other in the room to keep getting better.”

Jagger Reese (106) and Zak Anderson (160) placed third in the tournament after losing semi finals matches to tough opponents.  Pixler said, “Jagger and Zak are two very good wrestlers that will be very successful this year.  We just have to find a way to minimize the small mistakes that cost them points.”

Three wrestlers earned a trip to the finals, including Freshman Ayston Perez at 195 pounds. “Ayston is a kid that has been in the sport for a long time, and has seen tons of success.  Right now, he’s adjusting to the speed and tempo of high school wrestling, and he’s doing a very good job of it.  He can do some damage at 195 as a freshman for us.”  Perez lost his finals match to a Scott City wrestler, but will have several chances to avenge the loss this season.

The other finalists were seniors Dalton Barker (152) and Austin Ochoa (220).  Barker lost to a ranked opponent from Scott City to place second.  Ochoa pinned his Lakin opponent on his way to his second Ron Smith Championship in two years.  Pixler said “Austin and Barker are two guys that we expect to be in the finals every week, and they didn’t disappoint this weekend.  As good as they are, they still have room to be better, and I have no doubt that they will keep working hard to achieve big things this year.”

Other placers included Edward Cortez (120), Juan Urbina (126), Juan Carlos Terrazas (132), and Alex Corpus (182).

On the JV side of the tournament, Jace Garrison took third at 195 pounds.

This week, the Tigers dual Liberal on Thursday night at 6:00 at the high school. On Saturday, they travel to Goodland to complete in the Holiday Classic Dual Tournament.

Pixler finished by saying “this week, we’re going to stress the ‘team’ side of the sport.  You aren’t wrestling for yourself and individual medals.  You’re wrestling for the guy next to you.  You’re wrestling for the entire team.  I’m excited to see how we perform in a dual setting.”
