One recent study found the average teacher in the U.S. works 50 hours per week, encompassing 12 hours of work for which they never get paid — grading papers, supervising extracurricular activities, counseling students, etc.
A teacher impacts some 3,000 students over the course of a career, often in ways that transcend the academic.
In one study, for example, 83 percent of U.S students ages 7 to 15 said a teacher had boosted their self-esteem and confidence, while 79 percent said a teacher encouraged them to follow their dreams and 75 percent pointed to a teacher as a mentor or role model.
Here are a few simple ways to show a teacher you care in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week:
- Pick out a cute little notebook that can help them stay organized, along with a handwritten note with a message such as “Just a note to say you’re a great teacher!”
- Stop at the local coffee shop (or log on to its website) so you can buy and send your teacher a gift card to fund their favorite up-and-at-‘em beverage. The note you enclose could say something clever like, “Thanks a latte for all your hard work!”
- Select a beautiful flowering plant or one with lush green foliage that can grace a teacher’s desk to remind them they’re appreciated. Your card could offer a meaningful message from your child such as, “Thank you for helping me grow.”
