KMS 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Pulls Out A Close One;

Beats Goodland 35-29

by Georjean Perez on December 10, 2017

The Kepley Middle School 8th grade girls played their final home basketball game on Thursday, December 7th, playing one of their best basketball games they have played all season.

In the A game, Ulysses defeated Goodland in a close game that went back and forth until Kepley pulled away in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter, winning the game 35 – 29.

Kepley led at the end of the first quarter 16-11 and at half-time 24-22.

At the end of the third quarter, KMS led 30-27 and then outscored Goodland 5-2 in the fourth quarter. As a team, we played much better defense as we moved our feet and did not get in foul trouble.  For part of the game, we played a box-and-one on Goodland’s best player, and Isis Hill did an excellent job playing man defense and not allowing their best player to get the ball.

Kylie Hartman did a great job denying the post on the inside and offensively she played a great game, scoring 12 points. Gaby Sandoval worked very hard inside and got a lot of rebounds, also scoring 12 points in the game. Hayden Riley did a good job bringing the ball down against their full court press as well as running the offense, scoring 7 points.

Others scoring in the game were Itzel Perez and Mercedes Breese with 2 points each. Dalia Garcia had some great passes on the press break as well as getting the ball inside on the offense.

The Lady Cubs A,B, and C teams traveled to Guymon on Monday, December 4th, with the C-team coming out with a win, 6 – 4.

Scoring for the Lady Cubs were Kaylee Denny, Destiny Rico, and Kilea Sams with 2 points each. Kaylee Denny did a good job on defense and the team really improved running the offense.

In the B game, Guymon defeated Ulysses 25-14. We struggled against their press but improved as the game went on.

Scoring for the Lady Cubs: Itzel Perez 8 points, Destinee Rico 4 points, and Cassie Guitierrez 2 points.

In the A game, we had a very difficult time handling their tight man-to-man press in the first half, putting up a lot of shots but just couldn’t seem to score against their 2-3 defense.

Guymon led 13-7 at the end of quarter one and 22-12 at the half.

In the second half, Guymon did not press but we really had a difficult time scoring, with Guymon scoring 26 points in the second half to Ulysses scoring only 4 points.

Scoring for the Lady Cubs: Mercedes Breese 7 points, Hayden Riley 4 points, Joana Hernandez 3 points, and Gaby Sandoval and Isis Hill with 2 points each.  The Lady Cubs will play their last game of the season when they travel to Scott City on Tuesday, December 12th.
