The Kepley Middle School 8th grade girls basketball A- team improved their record to 3 -3 as they defeated the Hugoton Eagles on Thursday, November 12th, 2015.
Both the A and B teams played at Hugoton, with the A team playing at 4 pm, followed by the B team. In A- team action, the Cubs outscored the Eagles 9 to 7 in the first quarter and 12 to 9 in the second quarter, leading 21 to 16 at half-time. In the third quarter, the girls came out and played a tough, matching 2-3 defense, shutting down Hugoton’s offense, outscoring them 15 to 3 in the third quarter and 9 to 3 in the fourth quarter, making the final score 44 – 22.
This game was, by far, the best offensive and defensive game that we have played so far this season. The Lady Cubs made some great adjustments throughout the game and kept their focus. We did a much better job of putting ourselves in the right area defensively and we were able to convert many steals into lay-ups, getting several “and-ones” in the process. Clara Garcia is an excellent point guard and did a great job running the offense as well as she has very quick hands on defense. Xochitl Rodriguez stepped up and played the best all-around game. Emilee Meier came in off the bench and did a great job rebounding as well as played great defense. Avery Ysac did a fantastic job rebounding as she controlled the boards both offensively and defensively. Scoring for the Lady Cubs was Avery Ysac with 19 points, Clara Garcia 9 points, Xochitl Rojas 8 points, Clara Price 5 points, Addison Trevino 2 points, and Emilee Meier 1 point.
In B-team action, the Lady Cubs improved their record to 4 – 2, as they defeated the Hugoton Eagles 22 – 7. It was a great team effort, both offensively and defensively, as 7 of the 8 players scored in the game. Aaliyah Flores and Adrian Romero did a nice job of running the offense while Macee Teeter and Linda Gomez did a fine job controlling the boards. Leading scorer for the Lady Cubs was Aaliyah Flores with 8 points followed by Skylar Maturey and Linda Gomez with 3 points each; and Emilee Meier, Adrian Romero, Tyann Weis, and Macee Teeter scoring 2 points each. We are very proud of all of our girls for their great efforts and improvements made!
