UHS Cross Country Takes 4th and 5th Place in Lakin;

The UHS girls’ varsity cross country team ran to a strong finish, despite losing several of their runners. Sophomore RayLynn Wartman, went down with an ankle injury at the mile-and-a-half mark and was not able to finish the race. She was in 4th place when she went down. The girls also had to run without their number three runner, senior Iexa Jaquez, and their number seven runner, Karina Lara, due to an ankle injury earlier in the season. Freshman Stacy Burns continues to show great improvement as she ran to another personal record and finished in 17th place with a fine time of 22:54. “Stacy works very hard at practice and we are very proud of her as well as all of the girls!” said coach Georjean Perez.

Junior Alex Barbosa continues to lead the tigers, finishing the race in a fine time of 17:44. Two freshmen, Brendan Hudson and Paul Garcia, have had an excellent season this year and continue to work hard and show great improvement as they have both medaled in every race thus far. “Seniors Jacob Irvin, Kolin Loewen, Ray Taylor, and Luis Heredia are showing consistent improvement and are getting close to running in the eighteens, which is really where we need these guys to be when we go into league and regionals in the next two weeks,” Coach Georjean Perez said. “We are really proud of these guys for their hard work and great effort!”
