2014 Team Needs 3 More Wins to Set New School Volleyball Record

by Coach Eslick on October 06, 2014

Coach Courtney Eslick, who started Ulysses High’s volleyball program 34 years ago in 1981, remembers 1992-93 as the winningest season on record, going 28-2 in regular season, and 30-3 after state competition.  This year’s senior-heavy team is pulling out all of the stops to set a new record for UHS, and a lot of people are paying attention.

Considering only 2 losses during the season to a strong Emporia team, the Tigers have otherwise racked-up 26 wins, which include outperforming Hugoton and Holcomb on October 2nd in front of a large hometown crowd. For seniors Jessi Arnold, Kyann Eslick, Tori Billings, Kassy Field, Kristen Calderwood, Carolina Gallegos, and Jordan Howard, sentimental thoughts about this being their last time to play volleyball in the UHS gym closely matched those of coach Eslick, whose upcoming retirement also meant it was his last time to lead his team in the home gym.  Underclassmen Liberty Aranda, Jennifer Garza, Kali Kenny and Jasztyn Moyer also contribute mightily to the force that is the Lady Tiger volleyball team.

The past week’s wins include, for the 4th straight year, a clean sweep at the SWH Tournament on October 4th, taking out Stanton County, Meade, Cimmaron and SWH in 2 straight games each.  The Tigers also removed a tough Spearville squad in the championship finals, as the ladies took that one in 2 straight, delivering another plaque to the trophy case at UHS.

Excitement continues to build as the Tigers prepare to go back to the net on October 9th against Dodge City, Scott City, and host Garden City, followed by GWAC competition on October 18th at host Scott City.  All wins in the final tally before sub-state play on October 25th in McPherson, would result in the setting a new record for UHS volleyball!
