by Dennis Gonzales on September 15, 2014
A stubborn defense and five Ian Rudzik touchdowns helped Ulysses smother fellow GWAC member Hugoton 46-14 in the Tigers’ 2014 home opener on September 12.
A lethal 31-point scoring explosion dug the visitors into an unescapable 41-6 half-time hole.
Hugoton led 6-0 in the first quarter, but a seven-yard Rudzik run and 2-point PAT propelled the Tigers in front for good.
In the decisive second, Rudzik scored on runs of 51, 33, and 39 yards.
Juan Anguiano bolted for a 15-yard TD and Zach Romero joined the ground attack with a 15-yard TD run.
For the game Rudzik collected 156 yards on 12 rushes.
His fifth touchdown came on the other side of the ball. He returned an interception 80 yards for the Tigers’ lone third-quarter score.
Their defense held Hugoton to 3.7 yards per carry (12-156) and intercepted three passes.
Ulysses improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the GWAC.
The Tigers, who are ranked fourth in the Wichita Eagle 4A-I poll, are at Holcomb on September 19.
The 2-0 hosts dropped Cimarron 36-0 and Goodland 55-14.
