4A Cross Country State Championship Results
Barbosa, Sanchez and Branscum Compete
by Georjean Perez on November 04, 2013
Three Ulysses High School cross country runners traveled to Wamego on Saturday, November 2, 2013 to run in the class 4A state cross country championships. It was a chilly day with temperatures in the 50âs and a light breeze, which made it ideal for race day.
Outstanding freshman Alex Barbosa ran the 5K race in 18:05, earning a 34th place finish out of a total of 105 runners. He has had a great season and has a promising future in the coming years!
Payton Sanchez, a junior, finished the race in a time of 18:20, earning a 50th place finish out of 105 runners. This is Paytonâs second year to run cross country and has made unbelievable growth as a runner.
Both of these young men are great competitors! They donât âsettleâ in a race but rather fight all the way to the finish line.
Senior Chisholm Branscum finished her high school cross country career earning her second cross country state medal, finishing 18th out of 104 girls. She ran the 4K race in a time of 16:30. Chisholm has run cross country for 4 years and has shown tremendous growth throughout her high school career. As a freshman, she was just learning how to run cross country as she did not run in middle school. Her sophomore year, Chisholm missed qualifying for state by 7 seconds and 2 places and she used this disappointment to fuel her motivation in the off-season going into her junior year. Her determination and dedication paid off as she was regional runner-up champion and placed 6th at state. As a distance runner, Chisholm is still considered to be âdevelopingâ and has a great future ahead of her as she tries to decide which college she will run for. We will not only miss Chisholm for her great running ability next year but we will also miss her great leadership skills as she was our team captain for 4 years!
