What Is Forensic?

EXTEMPRANEOUS SPEECH : A topic is drawn thirty minutes before the performance is scheduled. The students then get thirty minutes to look over the materials that they may have brought with them. They are able to use 4 by 6 note card to aid them during their speech (although the better speakers don't use notecards anymore!). This speech must be at least 4 minutes in length and no longer than 7 minutes.


INFORMATIVE SPEAKING : This speech has already been prepared by the student before the tounrament date. The purpose of this speech is to inform the listeners about the topic that the speaker has chosen. No visual aids or note cards are allowed for this speech. The student is expected to memorize it. This speech also has a time limit of no longer than 7 minutes.

ORIDINAL ORATION : The student prepares a persuasive speech before the tournament. Again no visual aids or note cards are allowed since this pseech should also be memorized. The time limit on this speech is 10 minutes

POETRY : The speaker presents one or more readings from a printed manuscript. It also includes transitions and an introduction that is written by the speaker and includes the tilte and author of the piece. The time limit on poetry is also 7 minutes and it includes transition and introduction time.


PROSE : The speaker presents one or more readings from a printed manuscript. Prose includes fiction (novels, short stories) and non-fiction (articles, essays, journals, biographies). These selections are introduced and/or jioned together by a brief and original introduction that includes the title and author of the selection. The time limit on Prose is no longer than 7 minutes and includes introductions and transitions.




HUMOROUS SOLO ACTING (HSA) : The speaker presents memorized selections from published pieces (play scripts, short stories, novels, poetry, and published television or movie scripts) of comedic nature. This event also uses an introduction that includes the tilte and author. The time limit is 10 minutes.



SERIOUS SOLO ACTING (SSA) : These also memorized and can come from the same sources as the HSA event material although serious in nature. The introdution includes the tile anf author of piece. The time is 10 minutes.


DUET ACTING (DA) : The mood can be humorous or serious. Two students perform a cutting from a published work of literature. The only props allowed are two chairs and a table. This is also a memorized event that should include a original introductions that includes the title and author of the piece. This performance (including intro) has a time limit of no more than 10 minutes


IMPROVISED DUET ACTING (IDA) : Two students draw two characters, one situation, and one location. They then get thirty minutes to create a conflict, resolution, and original dialogue using the items that they drew. There are two chairs and a table available for this event. IDA performances should also include and original title and introduction. The time limit on IDA, including introduction, must be a minimum of 4 minutes and no longer than 7 minutes.
